The belt-operated timing system or timing belt system is still the most widespread type of timing system in cars on the road in Europe. It is estimated that some 80% of vehicles are equipped with a belt-operated timing system.
The operating dynamics of a timing belt are as follows: movement is generated by the driveshaft. This synchronises valve opening and closing movements by means of the gear to which the toothed belt is connected to create a perfect movement. In this way, separate, independent elements are converted to a single element: the engine.
A timing belt is made up of the following parts:
- TOOTHED BELT
This connecting element is essential for the operation of the whole system. It can come in different sizes, lengths and materials. Lyra Bearing can provide different kit composition options: with premium brand timing belts or belts branded to meet specific customer needs.
- AUTOMATIC TENSIONERS
This component performs the role of maintaining the timing belt under constant tension. The tensioner, more commonly referred to as a belt tensioner, can work on the back of the belt or, in some cases, on the inside of the belt, where the teeth are present.
- FIXED PULLEY
This component, made up of a bearing and a wheel fitted to the outside, ensures the belt slides on its back to maintain its linearity and stability even at high rpms.
- SCREWS AND BOLTS
It is important to replace worn screws and/or bolts during maintenance. If they are reused instead of replacing, this can cause premature yielding that can lead to severe damage to the engine.
- WATER PUMP
Where required, the kits can include a water pump, which is a vital part of the engine. Its function is to cause coolant to circulate inside the circuit by means of an impeller inside the pump, thus preventing the engine from overheating.
